Thorold holds on for 5-4 win against AncasterThorold Community Arena Thu, Feb 04, 2016 Story by Narrative Science.
The Thorold Blackhawks survived a determined comeback attempt by the Ancaster Avalanche on the way to a 5-4 win. A goal by Anthony Merante put Thorold up 4-1 in the second period, but Ancaster pulled to within one on Owen Burnell's tally 11:13 into the third period. The Blackhawks' offense rang up 32 shots on the Avalanche's net. Thorold found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. The Blackhawks have scored at the pace of 2.8 goals per game during the current campaign. Thorold's penalty kill unit could not stop Ancaster's power play, which converted on three of four opportunities. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals. Thorold additionally got points from Jake Lloyd, who also had one goal and one assist. Cal Davis also scored for Thorold. More assists for Thorold came via Greg Christmas and Perth Swick, who each chipped in one and Aaron Nunes and Nick Sacco, who contributed two each. The Avalanche kept the Blackhawks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Josh Astorino made 47 saves on 51 shots. Ancaster was helped by Fedor Gordeev, who racked up two goals. Gordeev scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 18:28 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Thorold. The Avalanche earned a power play opportunity when Quinn Geddes was put in the box for holding. Michael Pollice picked up the assist. Gordeev's next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 Thorold with 3:09 left in the third period. Ancaster also got points from Burnell, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Ancaster also got a goal from Cole Nagy as well. In addition, Ancaster received assists from Owen Norton, Max Balinson, and Joshua Pace, who each chipped in one. Thorold incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Cole Ceci made 27 saves for Ancaster on 32 shots. The Avalanche incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Ancaster ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Dustin Burr was ejected from the game.
