Waterloo shrugs off penalties, upends Elmira, 7-2

The Elmira Sugar Kings failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Waterloo Siskins shook off a number of penalties to win, 7-2.

Waterloo was led by Joshua Slegers, who tallied one goal. Slegers scored on the power play 10:17 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Waterloo. The Siskins had taken the advantage when Elmira's Jeff Jordan got sent off for slashing. Andrew Lane picked up the assist.

Waterloo forced the Sugar Kings goalie Liam Devine to work between the pipes, taking 43 shots. The Siskins found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. Waterloo has scored at the pace of 3.2 goals per game during the current campaign. Team's forwards weren't the only contributers offensively, and the team's defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.

Waterloo additionally got points from Lane, who also had one goal and one assist and Anthony Pullicino, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Waterloo included Lucas Goodman and Brett Schaefer, who each put in two. More assists for Waterloo came via Owen Kipke, who had two, Austin Bentley, who had three, and Conner Jean, Nick King, Joel Penticost, Thomas Haffner, Ryan Sparkes, and Nate Schnarr, who contributed one each.

Elmira was helped by Zac Coulter, who registered one goal and one assist. Coulter scored on the power play 1:33 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Waterloo. A tripping penalty on Pullicino had put the Sugar Kings on the power play. Ethan Skinner provided the assist. Elmira also got points from Skinner, who also registered one goal and one assist. In addition, Elmira received assists from Beau Goehrum and Mackenzie MacSorley, who each chipped in one.

Bailey DeGasperis made 26 saves for the Siskins on 28 shots. Waterloo incurred 20 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Devine recorded 36 saves for Elmira. The Sugar Kings incurred 32 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
