Leamington wins tough contest against St. Thomas, 5-3

The Leamington Flyers and the St. Thomas Stars were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Leamington made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-3.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by J.P. Grineau at 17:33 of the second period.

St. Thomas' power play was ineffective against the Flyers' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

The Stars were unable to stop Leamington from sending pucks towards the net, and the Flyers eventually piled up 42 shots on goal.

Leamington also got points from Cale Phibbs, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Leamington included Mitchell Amante, Scott Florence, and Derek Elliott, who each put in one. In addition, Leamington received assists from Thomas Virban, who had two and Nicolas Mainella, Zak Parlette, and David Storey, who each chipped in one.

St. Thomas was led by Matt McJannet, who racked up one goal and two assists. McJannet scored on the power play 7:06 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Leamington. The Stars had gained a power play chance when Florence was whistled for kneeing. Carson Brookshaw picked up the assist. St. Thomas additionally got points from Jake Reed, who also registered one goal and one assist and Brookshaw, who also had one goal and one assist. More assists for St. Thomas came via Matt MacPherson and Spencer Hutchinson, who contributed one each.

Tyler Wall made 25 saves for Leamington on 28 shots. The Flyers incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Dan Black rejected 37 shots on goal for St. Thomas. The Stars incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
