Leamington shrugs off penalties, upends Sarnia, 3-1

The Sarnia Legionnaires failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Leamington Flyers shook off a number of penalties to win, 3-1.

Leamington was paced by Zach Guilbeault, who registered one goal. Guilbeault scored 11:58 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Leamington. Scott Florence provided the assist.

The Flyers put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Sarnia to score on any of its six power plays. Leamington kept the Legionnaires' goalie busy throughout the game, and Shayne Battler made 44 saves on 47 shots.

Leamington also had goals scored by Scott Emerson and Mitchell Amante, who each put in one. More assists for Leamington came via Joe Urbanic, Aaron Langlois, Cale Phibbs, and Mark Gangnon, who contributed one each.

Sarnia excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. The Legionnaires' offense operated below their season average. Sarnia puts an average of 3.2 pucks into the net per game.

The Legionnaires were led by Brendan Shagena, who scored the team's only goal. Shagena scored 6:00 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Eric Marsh assisted on the tally.

Tyler Wall made 18 saves for the Flyers on 19 shots. Leamington ended with 19 minutes in penalty time with seven minors and one major. The Flyers ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Emerson was ejected from the game. Sarnia ended with 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major. For the Legionnaires, Brad Yowart was ejected from the game.
