The Thorold Blackhawks beat the Welland Jr. Canadians, 2-0, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Thorold took over the lead for good with a goal by Colin Farrell at 3:17 in the first period. Aaron Nunes picked up the assist.

Josh Astorino frustrated Welland's offense all game, and stopped 30 shots en route to a shutout. Astorino certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.56 entering the contest.

The Blackhawks were sparked by Farrell, who racked up one goal.

Thorold's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Welland power plays.

Nick Sacco also scored for Thorold. In addition, Thorold received assists from Anthony Merante and Mitchell Mendonca, who each chipped in one.

The Jr. Canadians stifled the Blackhawks' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Welland did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Jr. Canadians put an average of 2.9 pucks into the net per game.

Thorold incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Welland's Chris Janzen stopped 25 shots out of the 27 that he faced. The Jr. Canadians incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
