Strathroy beats St. Marys 5-4 after comeback scare

The Strathroy Rockets survived a determined comeback attempt by the St. Marys Lincolns on the way to a 5-4 win.

Strathroy made the score 5-3 on a goal by Kieran Milne at 2:58 in the third period, and St. Marys got as close as 5-4 when Nathan Smith scored 5:11 into the third period.

The Rockets got the win with help from a great game by Lucas Latina, who had two goals and one assist. Latina scored the first of his two goals at 5:42 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Wesley Kelly assisted on the tally. Latina's next tally made the score 4-3 Strathroy with 3:57 left in the second period. Strathroy had gotten the advantage when the Lincolns' Colin Capstick was sent off for fighting. Milne picked up the assist.

The Rockets kept St. Marys' goalie busy throughout the game, and Emanuel Vella made 33 saves on 38 shots. Strathroy surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Rockets average 2.6 goals per game.

Strathroy additionally got points from Steve Griggs, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Milne, who also had one goal and one assist. Strathroy also got a goal from Turner Balasin as well. In addition, Strathroy received assists from Dante Copps, Tristan Sedlak, Max Ewart, and Jeff Williams, who each chipped in one.

The Lincolns' offense rang up 44 shots on Strathroy's net.

St. Marys was led by Brent House, who racked up two goals and two assists. House scored the first of his two goals at 16:39 into the first period to make the score 2-2. Josh Zlatinszky assisted on the tally. House's next tally made the score 3-3 with 11:41 left in the second period. The Lincolns earned a power play opportunity when Dawson Cook was put in the box for high sticking. Smith picked up the assist. St. Marys also got points from Smith, who also registered one goal and one assist and Jack Wieringa, who also finished with one goal and two assists. More assists for St. Marys came via Ryan Martin, who had one.

Dane Gubbels made 40 saves for the Rockets on 44 shots. Strathroy incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. St. Marys totaled nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major and went 2-for-5 on the power play. The Lincolns ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Capstick was ejected from the game.
