Willms' hat trick boosts Kitchener over Waterloo, 6-2

The Waterloo Siskins could not stop the Kitchener Dutchmen's Jason Willms, who tallied a hat trick in a 6-2 win.

Willms' first goal came 11:56 into the first period. He then added goals at 8:52 into the second and at 15:10 into the third.

Kitchener's penalty kill excelled, as the Dutchmen gave up one goal despite allowing seven power plays.

Kitchener's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled seven minors and one major for 29 minutes in penalty time. The Dutchmen surpassed its season average of 24.0 penalty minutes per game. Kitchener forced Waterloo's goaltenders to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, totaling 36 shots and forcing 30 saves. Mitchell Datz made 13 stops and Bailey DeGasperis made 17.

Kitchener additionally got points from Mark Bzowey, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Owen Lane, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, and Jeremy Kuehn, who also racked up one goal and one assist. In addition, Kitchener received assists from Marselis Subban, who had two and Matthew Cruickshank, Austin Gaboury, Ryan George, Alex Demrovsky, and Taite Wirschke, who each chipped in one.

The Dutchmen were unable to stop the Siskins from sending pucks towards the net, and Waterloo eventually piled up 33 shots on goal. The Siskins found themselves short handed often, totaling 26 penalty minutes and allowing seven power plays.

Waterloo was led by Luke Gazzola, who had two goals. Gazzola scored the first of his two goals at 15:47 into the second period to make the score 5-1 Kitchener. Noah Benjamin(APM) provided the assist. Gazzola's next tally made the score 5-2 Kitchener with 14:29 left in the third period. The Siskins had gotten the advantage when Kitchener's George was sent off for tripping. Gary Mantz picked up the assist. More assists for Waterloo came via Andrew Lane and Nick Hirst, who contributed one each.

The Dutchmen's Luke Richardson stopped 31 shots out of the 33 that he faced. For Kitchener, Subban was ejected from the game.
