Elmira boosted by Devine's play in net, beats Cambridge 3-1

The Elmira Sugar Kings relied on the sparkling performance of Liam Devine in net to grab a 3-1 win against the Cambridge Winter Hawks.

Elmira's penalty kill excelled, as the Sugar Kings gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays.

Elmira was paced by Harlen VanWynsberghe, who registered one goal. VanWynsberghe scored 6:50 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Elmira. Zac Coulter provided the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 12:13 into the first period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Others who scored for Elmira included David Elford and Mackenzie MacSorley, who each put in one. More assists for Elmira came via Ethan Skinner, who had two and Alex Peterson and Ryan Walsh, who each chipped in one.

Cambridge was often in penalty trouble, totaling nine minors and one major for 53 minutes in penalty time. The Winter Hawks surpassed its season average of 28.0 penalty minutes per game. Cambridge's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on eight Elmira power plays. The Sugar Kings were unable to stop the Winter Hawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Cambridge eventually piled up 36 shots on goal.

The Winter Hawks were led by Beau Goehrum, who scored the team's only goal. Goehrum scored on the power play 8:00 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Cambridge had taken the advantage when Elmira's Elford got sent off for interference. Rob Grant picked up the assist.

The Sugar Kings' Devine stopped 35 shots out of the 36 that he faced. Elmira ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major. For the Sugar Kings, Colton Culbert was ejected from the game. Scott Patton rejected 27 shots on goal for the Winter Hawks. Cambridge ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Scott Del Zotto was ejected from the game.
