Welland stifles Niagara Falls' comeback, gains 5-3 victory

The Welland Jr. Canadians came close to giving away a three-goal lead to the Niagara Falls Canucks, but did just enough to escape with a 5-3 victory.

Welland led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Jr. Canadians' Tyler Stranges scored at 14:38 in the second period to put Welland up 4-1.

The Jr. Canadians were paced by Stranges, who tallied one goal and one assist.

In a losing effort, Niagara Falls was led by Frank Pucci, who registered one goal and two assists. Pucci scored on the power play 12:08 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Welland. The Canucks earned a power play opportunity when Stranges was put in the box for holding. Johnny Curran provided the assist.

Welland kept Niagara Falls' goalie busy throughout the game, and Joseph Murdaca made 26 saves on 31 shots.

Welland additionally got points from Jack Fitzgerald, who also had one goal and one assist. Welland also had goals scored by Nathan Ferris, Matt Martin, and Steven Farano, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Welland were Max Cipriano, Cole Hamilton, Bradey Johnson, Adam Barron, and Jake Shaw, who contributed one each.

The Jr. Canadians were unable to stop the Canucks from sending pucks towards the net, and Niagara Falls eventually piled up 48 shots on goal.

Others who scored for Niagara Falls included Zack Lansfield and Evan Denley, who each put in one. In addition, Niagara Falls received assists from Peter Falivena and Matthew Marsden, who each chipped in one.

Chris Janzen recorded 45 saves for Welland. The Jr. Canadians totaled 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major and went 2-for-4 on the power play. For Welland, Hamilton was ejected from the game. The Canucks totaled 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 2-for-6 on the power play. Niagara Falls ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Marsden was ejected from the game.
