Elmira survives Waterloo comeback, wins 6-4

The Waterloo Siskins tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the Elmira Sugar Kings held on for a 6-4 victory.

Elmira took a 6-3 lead during the third period, only to have Waterloo storm back on a Mitchell Rooney goal 13:01 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

The Sugar Kings forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 15.0 minutes per game Elmira had been spending in the box. The Sugar Kings forced the Siskins goalie Mitchell Datz to work between the pipes, taking 42 shots. Elmira bested its season scoring average. The Sugar Kings average 3.4 goals per game. Elmira was ineffective while on the power play, as it was held to two goals off of nine man advantages. The defensemen of the Sugar Kings were also effective in Waterloo's zone, and came away with two goals.

Elmira was led by Ryan Walsh, who finished with one goal and one assist. Walsh scored on the power play 16:44 into the first period to make the score 3-2 Elmira. The Sugar Kings had gotten the advantage when the Siskins' Rooney was sent off for holding. Quinten Bruce picked up the assist. Elmira also got points from Bruce, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Elmira also had goals scored by David Elford, Jeff Jordan, Alex Peterson, and Zac Coulter, who each put in one. In addition, Elmira received assists from Dawson Shackelton, Jake Moggy, and Mackenzie MacSorley, who contributed one each and Mitch Montgomery and Ethan Skinner, who each chipped in two.

Elmira was unable to stop Waterloo from sending pucks towards the net, and the Siskins eventually piled up 47 shots on goal. Waterloo got an offensive boost from its blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game. The Siskins could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 76 minutes in penalties during the game.

Waterloo was helped by Nate Schnarr, who registered one goal. Schnarr scored on the power play 7:15 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Elmira. The Siskins earned a power play opportunity when Ryan Maksymyk was put in the box for hooking. Brett Schaefer assisted on the tally. Others who scored for Waterloo included Joshua Slegers and Nick Hirst, who scored one goal each. More assists for Waterloo came via Nick King, who had two.

The Sugar Kings' Liam Conway stopped 43 shots out of the 47 that he faced. Elmira ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Rob Kohli was ejected from the game. Mitchell Datz made 36 saves for Waterloo on 42 shots. The Siskins registered three goals on nine power play opportunities. For Waterloo, Luke Gazzola and Hirst were ejected from the contest.
