Niagara Falls pulls away in second, rolls over Welland, 8-3

The Welland Jr. Canadians was within striking distance after one period, but the Niagara Falls Canucks put the pedal down in the second en route to an 8-3 victory.

Frank Pucci was all over the ice for Niagara Falls, as he tallied one goal and two assists in the win. Pucci scored 8:20 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Niagara Falls. Matthew Marsden picked up the assist.

The Canucks' penalty kill excelled, as Niagara Falls gave up zero goals despite allowing 13 power plays.

The Canucks forced Welland's goaltenders to work in net, firing 33 shots and forcing 25 saves. Chris Janzen made 16 stops and Brandon McCorriston made nine. Niagara Falls stifled the Jr. Canadians' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Canucks bested their season scoring average. Niagara Falls averages 3.3 goals per game. The Canucks were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 36 penalty minutes.

Niagara Falls additionally got points from Johnny Curran, who also tallied one goal and two assists and Marsden, who also registered two goals and one assist to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Niagara Falls included Zack Lansfield, Matthew Baldinelli, Scott Grieve, and Luke Laurin, who each put in one. Other players who recorded assists for Niagara Falls were Taggart Ledyard, Thomas Flack, Evan Denley, Austin Bottrell, and Cristian DiFonzo, who contributed one each and Sean Farquharson and Peter Falivena, who each chipped in two.

Welland was led by Tyler Stranges, who racked up one goal and one assist. Stranges scored 2:23 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Brayden Crowder assisted on the tally. Welland also had goals scored by Jack Fitzgerald and Matt Martin, who scored one goal each. In addition, Welland received assists from Bradey Johnson, Nathan MacDuff, and Andy Paul, who contributed one each.

Niagara Falls' Joseph Murdaca stopped 24 shots out of the 27 that he faced. The Canucks registered one goal on two power play opportunities. The Jr. Canadians incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with two minors. Welland ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Cameron Aitken was ejected from the game.
