Leamington beats Chatham 8-0 as Wall gains shutout

Tyler Wall recorded a shutout against the Chatham Maroons as the Leamington Flyers picked up an 8-0 win.

Leamington got the win behind a great game by Derek Elliott, who had one goal and two assists. Elliott scored on the power play 9:00 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Leamington. The Flyers had taken the advantage when Chatham's Brendan Johnston got sent off for roughing. Zak Parlette picked up the assist.

Leamington's penalty kill excelled, as the Flyers gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 18:57 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with six game misconducts.

Leamington forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 11 minors and three majors for 67 minutes in penalty time. The Flyers had been averaging 35.0 minutes in penalties per game. Leamington forced Maroons' goaltenders to work between the pipes, ripping 37 shots and forcing 29 saves. Johnston made 12 stops and Parker Butler made 17. The Flyers stifled the Maroons' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Leamington's goal total was higher than its season average. The Flyers average 4.2 goals per game.

Leamington additionally got points from Cale Phibbs, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Luke Sanko, who also grabbed one goal and one assist, Mitchell Amante, who also finished with one goal and four assists to lead the team in points, and Liam Hogan, who also registered one goal and one assist. Leamington also had goals scored by Joe Urbanic, Matthew Opblinger, and Thomas Virban, who scored one goal each. In addition, Leamington received assists from J.P. Grineau, Cale Allen, and Mark Gangnon, who contributed one each.

Chatham's penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and three majors for 65 minutes in penalty time. The Maroons surpassed its season average of 29.0 penalty minutes per game. Chatham's offense operated below its season average. The Maroons average 4.4 goals per game.

Tyler Wall made 26 saves for Leamington on 26 shots. The Flyers registered two goals on five power play opportunities. Team's Nicolas Mainella, Parlette, Sanko, and Brendan McGhee were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. For Chatham, Jordan Winter, Josh Barraclough, Luc Knight, and Steven Beenackers were ejected from the contest.
