Chatham beats Sarnia 8-2 as Ford gets hat trick

Gus Ford netted a hat trick to lead the Chatham Maroons over the Sarnia Legionnaires, 8-2.

Ford got on the scoresheet 18:38 into the first period. He then added goals at 15:09 into the second and at 1:23 into the third.

Sarnia trailed by one after the first period, but Chatham went into the second intermission with a 6-2 lead and never looked back.

The Maroons forced the Legionnaires' goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, finishing with 49 shots and forcing 41 saves. Shane Battler made 25 stops and Jakob Knowles made 16. Chatham's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Sarnia power plays. The Maroons' goal total was higher than their season average. This season, Chatham averages 4.2 goals per contest.

Chatham additionally got points from Ian Faubert, who also registered one goal and three assists to lead the team in points. Chatham also had goals scored by Ross Krieger, who had two and Connor Koviak and Steven Beenackers, who scored one goal each. In addition, Chatham received assists from Michael Douglas, Brayden Hopkins, Logan Percy, and Teddy McGeen, who contributed one each and Connor McKinnon, Dede Cato, and Austin Thompson, who each chipped in two.

Sarnia kept the Maroons' goalie busy throughout the game, and Brendan Johnston made 33 saves on 35 shots.

The Legionnaires were helped by Jordan Fogarty, who grabbed one goal. Fogarty scored 6:10 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Sarnia. Brandon Layman picked up the assist. Zack Vanderwal also scored for Sarnia. More assists for Sarnia came via Ryan Trottier, Jarret Marks, and PJ Vandervaart, who contributed one each.

Chatham incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Sarnia incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
