Ancaster beats Niagara Falls 7-5 after comeback scare

The Ancaster Avalanche survived a determined comeback attempt by the Niagara Falls Canucks on the way to a 7-5 win.

Ancaster took a 6-2 lead during the third period, only to have Niagara Falls storm back on a Aviv Milner goal 5:33 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

The Avalanche forced the Canucks goalie Joseph Murdaca to work between the pipes, taking 35 shots. Ancaster's penalty kill unit could not stop Niagara Falls' power play, which converted on three of four opportunities.

The Avalanche were led by Owen Burnell, who grabbed two goals. Burnell scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 2:15 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Ancaster. A high sticking penalty on Dillon Hill had put Ancaster on the power play. Max Balinson assisted on the tally. Burnell's next tally on the power play made the score 6-2 Ancaster with 17:31 left in the third period. Matt Mannella provided the assist. Ancaster additionally got points from Lucas Pozzobon, who also had one goal and two assists to lead the team in points and Zach Lawrence, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Ancaster included Jesse Hilton, Michael Pollice, and Joshua Pace, who scored one goal each. More assists for Ancaster came via Ben Hughes, Zach Jackson, and Fedor Gordeev, who contributed one each and Noah Matteson and Ryan Cox, who each chipped in two.

The Canucks outdid their season average for goals scored. Niagara Falls has scored at the pace of 2.9 goals per game during the current campaign. The Canucks could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 46 minutes in penalties during the game.

Niagara Falls was helped by Matthew Marsden, who registered two goals and one assist. Marsden scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 5:22 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Ancaster. The Canucks had gotten the advantage when the Avalanche's Hilton was sent off for tripping. Luke Laurin picked up the assist. Marsden's next tally on the power play made the score 6-3 Ancaster with 15:23 left in the third period. Niagara Falls had taken the advantage when Ancaster's Hilton got sent off for roughing. Frank Pucci assisted on the tally. Niagara Falls also got points from Pucci, who also tallied one goal and two assists and Laurin, who also had one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Niagara Falls were Sean Farquharson, who had three and Thomas Flack and Cristian DiFonzo, who contributed one each.

The Avalanche's Matt Calas stopped 22 shots out of the 27 that he faced. Ancaster incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Murdaca rejected 28 shots on goal for the Canucks.
