Smith's hat trick boosts St. Marys over Sarnia, 5-1Pyramid Recreation Centre Fri, Oct 02, 2015 Story by Narrative Science.
Nathan Smith lifted the St. Marys Lincolns to a 5-1 victory with a hat trick against the Sarnia Legionnaires. Smith got on the scoresheet 5:16 into the second period. He then added goals at 14:31 into the second and at 11:45 into the third.Sarnia was stymied by St. Marys' netminder Paul Town, who stopped 41 shots during the victory. Town managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.9 prior to the game. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 4:04 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts. The Lincolns kept the Legionnaires' goalie busy throughout the game, and Shane Battler made 31 saves on 36 shots. St. Marys also got points from Tom McHenry, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Mike Tuffin also scored for St. Marys. In addition, St. Marys received assists from Phillip Buque, Nolan King, and Nick Whitworth, who contributed one each and Brent House and Graham Brulotte, who each chipped in two. St. Marys was unable to stop Sarnia from sending pucks towards the net, and the Legionnaires eventually piled up 42 shots on goal. Sarnia was led by Brandon Layman, who scored the team's only goal. Layman scored on the power play 11:49 into the second period to make the score 2-1 St. Marys. The Legionnaires had taken the advantage when the Lincolns' Whitworth got sent off for tripping. Jacob Stos assisted on the tally. St. Marys totaled 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 3-for-8 on the power play. For the Lincolns, Colin Capstick was ejected from the game. Sarnia totaled 21 minutes in penalty time with eight minors and one major and went 1-for-4 on the power play. The Legionnaires ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and PJ Vandervaart was ejected from the game.
