Welland downs Ancaster in overtime, 5-4 (OT)

The Welland Jr. Canadians pulled out a 5-4 (OT) overtime victory over the Ancaster Avalanche on a clutch goal by Brayden Crowder.

Welland overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Jr. Canadians trailed 2-0 after a goal by Ancaster's Owen Burnell at 17:47 in the first period. Welland tied things up at 4-4 on a goal by Ben Hughes at 19:46 in the third period.

Cameron Aitken was all over the ice for the Jr. Canadians, as he racked up two goals in the win. Aitken found the back of the net on the power play 8:46 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Ancaster and again while 12:06 into the third to make the score 4-3 Welland.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 8:21 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Welland forced the Avalanche goalie Matt Calas to work between the pipes, taking 32 shots. The Jr. Canadians outdid their season average for goals scored. Welland averages 2.9 goals per game. The Jr. Canadians struggled on the penalty kill, allowing Ancaster to score two power play goals on three chances.

Welland also got points from Nathan Ferris, who also registered one goal and two assists and Jack Fitzgerald, who also finished with one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. In addition, Welland received assists from Chad Maurice, Bradey Johnson, Nathan MacDuff, Matt Martin, Adam Barron, and Andy Paul, who each chipped in one.

The Avalanche forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up six minors and one major for 37 minutes in penalty time. Ancaster had been averaging 18.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Avalanche kept Welland's goalie busy throughout the game, and Brandon McCorriston made 39 saves on 43 shots.

Ancaster was helped by Joshua Pace, who grabbed one goal. Pace scored 16:30 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Ancaster. Ancaster additionally got points from Burnell, who also had one goal and one assist and Ryan Cox, who also registered one goal and one assist. More assists for Ancaster came via Max Balinson, who had one and Matt Mannella, who had two.

The Jr. Canadians totaled 22 minutes in penalty time with one minor and two majors and went 1-for-6 on the power play. For Welland, Jeff Williams and Maurice were ejected from the contest. Matt Calas made 27 saves for the Avalanche on 32 shots. Ancaster ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Ryan Knill was ejected from the game.
