Leamington holds on for 5-3 win against Strathroy

The Leamington Flyers survived a determined comeback attempt by the Strathroy Rockets on the way to a 5-3 win.

A goal by Travis Campbell put Leamington up 4-0 in the second period, but Strathroy pulled to within two on Matt McGhee's tally 8:24 into the third period.

The Flyers stifled the Rockets' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Strathroy was unable to stop Leamington from sending pucks towards the net, and the Flyers eventually piled up 40 shots on goal. Leamington was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 29 penalty minutes.

The Flyers were helped by Mark Gangnon, who registered one goal. Gangnon scored 6:43 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Leamington. Matthew Opblinger picked up the assist. Leamington additionally got points from J.P. Grineau, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and Luke Sanko, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Leamington also got a goal from Cale Phibbs as well. More assists for Leamington came via Nicolas Mainella and Mitchell Amante, who each chipped in one.

The Rockets' penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and one major for 47 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 33.0 minutes per game Strathroy had been spending in the box. The Rockets forced Leamington goalie Tyler Wall to work between the pipes, taking 40 shots. Strathroy's penalty kill unit could not stop the Flyers' power play, which converted on three of four opportunities.

The Rockets were helped by Codey McRoberts, who racked up one goal. McRoberts scored 18:57 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Leamington. Wesley Kelly provided the assist. Max Ewart also scored for Strathroy. In addition, Strathroy received assists from Jeff Clarke and TJ Harris, who contributed one each.

Leamington's Wall stopped 37 shots out of the 40 that he faced. For the Flyers, Joe Urbanic was ejected from the game. Mat Ouellet rejected 35 shots on goal for Strathroy. The Rockets registered zero goals on five power play opportunities. Strathroy ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Matthew Stevens was ejected from the game.
