Chatham survives Leamington comeback, wins 5-3

The Chatham Maroons, who led by three goals at one point, survived a comeback attempt by the Leamington Flyers and clinched a 5-3 victory.

Chatham led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Maroons' Connor Koviak scored at 7:35 in the second period to put Chatham up 3-0.

Gus Ford had a great game for the Maroons, netting two goals. Ford found the back of the net 11:21 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Chatham and again while 12:13 into the third to make the score 4-3 Chatham.

Chatham pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 63 penalty minutes.

The Maroons excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in six chances. Leamington was unable to stop Chatham from sending pucks towards the net, and the Maroons eventually piled up 45 shots on goal.

Chatham additionally got points from Steven Beenackers, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Chatham also got a goal from Blair Derynck as well. Other players who recorded assists for Chatham were Ross Krieger, who had two and Michael Douglas, Brayden Hopkins, Luc Knight, Mark Fratarcangelli, Ian Faubert, and Michael Levesque, who contributed one each.

The Flyers forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and one major for 53 minutes in penalty time. Leamington surpassed its season average of 30.0 penalty minutes per game. The Flyers stifled Chatham's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Leamington forced the Maroons goalie Colin Lauzon to work between the pipes, taking 49 shots. The Flyers' defense was uncharacteristically lax during the game. Leamington averages 2.2 goals allowed per game.

The Flyers were helped by Zach Guilbeault, who registered one goal and one assist. Guilbeault scored 2:26 into the third period to make the score 3-3. Mitchell Amante provided the assist. Leamington also got points from Matthew Opblinger, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Cale Phibbs also scored for Leamington. More assists for Leamington came via Scott Florence and Liam Hogan, who each chipped in one.

Colin Lauzon made 46 saves for Chatham on 49 shots. The Maroons registered zero goals on five power play opportunities. For Chatham, Josh Barraclough was ejected from the game. Leamington's Michael Barrett stopped 40 shots out of the 45 that he faced. The Flyers ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Scott Emerson was ejected from the game.
