Welland holds on for 3-2 win against Pelham

The Welland Jr. Canadians survived a determined comeback attempt by the Pelham Panthers on the way to a 3-2 win.

A goal by Chad Maurice put Welland up 3-0 in the first period, but Pelham pulled to within one on Thomas Young's tally 12:00 into the third period.

The Jr. Canadians stifled the Panthers' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Welland forced Pelham goalie Stephen Harvey to work between the pipes, taking 41 shots.

The Jr. Canadians were helped by Cole Hamilton, who finished with one goal. Hamilton scored 3:38 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Welland. Jack Fitzgerald provided the assist. Welland also got points from Fitzgerald, who also registered one goal and one assist. In addition, Welland received assists from Nicholas Boehmer, who had one.

The Panthers put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Welland to score on any of its six power plays.

Pelham was helped by Branden Mackinnon, who had one goal. Mackinnon scored 19:28 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Welland. Jesse Burger assisted on the tally. More assists for Pelham came via Zach Anderson and Adam Petric, who contributed one each.

Brandon McCorriston made 26 saves for the Jr. Canadians on 28 shots. Welland incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Harvey rejected 38 shots on goal for the Panthers. Pelham incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. The Panthers ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Connor Schmalz was ejected from the game.
