Erin stifles Fergus' comeback, gains 6-5 victory

The Erin Shamrocks came close to giving away a three-goal lead to the Fergus Devils, but did just enough to escape with a 6-5 victory.

Erin led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when the Shamrocks' Tyler Topham's scored at 5:37 in the second period to put Erin up 4-1.

Josh Sguigna was all over the ice for the Shamrocks, as he grabbed two goals in the win. Sguigna's tallies came on the power play at 9:35 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Erin and 1:19 into the third to make the score 6-4 Erin.

Erin stifled Fergus' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Shamrocks forced the Devils goalie Parker Merkley to work between the pipes, taking 54 shots. Erin found the back of the net more times than it usually has this season. This season, the Shamrocks average 3.6 goals per contest.

Erin additionally got points from Adam Gibson, who also racked up one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Others who scored for Erin included Patrick Reay and Chris Grenier, who scored one goal each. More assists for Erin came via Mario DAcunto, Mike Nicolucci, and Josh Tremblay, who contributed one a piece and James Watsonbag, Connor Mortimer, and Liam Adamson, who each chipped in two.

Fergus kept Erin's goalie busy throughout the game, and Mark Terry made 31 saves on 36 shots. The Devils excelled on the penalty kill, only allowing the Shamrocks to get one power play goal on 13 chances. Fergus could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 30 minutes in penalties during the game. The Devils got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

Fergus was led by Ben Roelofson, who had two goals and three assists. Roelofson scored the first of his two goals at 17:24 into the first period to make the score 3-1 Erin. Cody Gresswell picked up the assist. Roelofson's next tally made the score 4-3 Erin with 7:45 left in the second period. Dominic Weathall provided the assist. Fergus also had goals scored by Joshua Schafer, Griffin Heitshu, and James Murray, who each put in one. In addition, Fergus received assists from Patrick Snell and Luke Reinhart, who contributed one a piece.

Erin incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Parker Merkley made 48 saves for the Devils on 54 shots. Fergus registered zero goals on four power play opportunities.
