Schomberg shrugs off penalties, upends Caledon, 5-2Trisan Centre Thu, Jan 16, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Caledon Golden Hawks failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Schomberg Cougars shook off a number of penalties to win, 5-2. Schomberg was led by JP Crescenzi, who registered one goal and one assist. Crescenzi scored 11:21 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Schomberg. Declan Lampe provided the assist. In a losing effort, Caledon was sparked by Steve Zeppieri, who grabbed two goals. Zeppieri scored the first of his two goals at 17:40 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Schomberg. Derek Czech assisted on the tally. Zeppieri's next tally made the score 2-2 with 15:42 left in the third period. Daniel Cafagna provided the assist. The Cougars put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Golden Hawks to score on any of their seven power plays. Schomberg kept Caledon's goalie busy throughout the game, and Chris Vellucci made 35 saves on 40 shots. The Cougars' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Schomberg finished with 28 penalty minutes. Schomberg also got points from Colton Wood, who also tallied one goal and one assist and John Gage, who also had one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Schomberg included Christian Muenz and Derek Neilly, who scored one goal each. In addition, Schomberg received assists from Blake Culley, who had two and Arran Macdonald, Brandon Yorke, and Nicholas Chaykowsky, who each chipped in one. More assists for Caledon came via Nicholas McNutt and James Pitsadiotas, who contributed one a piece. The Cougars' Taylor Ewart stopped 21 shots out of the 23 that he faced. Schomberg registered one goal on six power play opportunities. The Golden Hawks incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with nine minors.
