Fergus uses shootout to best Midland, 5-4 (3-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Fergus Devils defeated the Midland Flyers in a shootout 5-4 (3-1 SO).

The shootout featured five attempts between both teams. Midland got a shootout goal from Darren Nesbitt. In addition to the clincher, Fergus got shootout goals from Robert Ebach and Joshua Machesney.

The Devils came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Fergus was down 2-0 after a goal by the Flyers' Nesbitt at 12:33 in the second period. The Devils knotted things up at 4-4 on a goal by Logan Webb at 11:43 in the third period.

Fergus' penalty kill excelled, as the Devils gave up zero goals despite allowing nine power plays.

Fergus stifled Midland's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man.

The Devils were helped by Mackenzie Cleveland, who tallied one goal. Cleveland scored on the power play 13:24 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Midland. Fergus had taken the advantage when the Flyers' Jake Evans got sent off for slashing. Ebach assisted on the tally. Fergus also got points from Ebach, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Fergus also had goals scored by Joshua Schafer and Cody Gresswell, who scored one goal each. In addition, Fergus received assists from Ben Roelofson, who had two and Griffin Heitshu, Patrick Snell, and Matt Clarke, who each chipped in one.

Midland kept the Devils' goalie busy throughout the game, and Parker Merkley made 28 saves on 32 shots.

Midland additionally got points from Webb, who also had one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Midland also got a goal from Matt Brown as well. Other players who recorded assists for Midland were Brandon Stratton, Kaden Shearer, and Bruce Brown, who contributed one a piece.

Fergus incurred 26 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. The Flyers' Marco Colangelo stopped 24 shots out of the 28 that he faced. Midland incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
