Erin wins tough contest against Caledon, 5-4

In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Erin Shamrocks escaped with a 5-4 victory over the Caledon Golden Hawks.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Josh Sguigna at 2:16 of the third period.

Sguigna was all over the ice for Erin, as he registered two goals in the win.

The Shamrocks' penalty kill excelled, as Erin gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays.

The the Shamrocks penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled eight minors and one major for 41 minutes in penalty time. Erin had been averaging 27.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Shamrocks stifled Caledon's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Golden Hawks were unable to stop Erin from sending pucks towards the net, and the Shamrocks eventually piled up 32 shots on goal.

Erin also had goals scored by Mike Nicolucci, Tyler Topham, and James Watsonbag, who scored one goal each. More assists for Erin came via Adam Gibson, who had two and Cosimo Morin, Chris Grenier, and Liam Adamson, who each chipped in one.

Caledon racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with six minors and three majors for 57 minutes in penalty time. The Golden Hawks surpassed its season average of 30.0 penalty minutes per game.

Caledon was led by Nicholas McNutt, who had two goals. McNutt scored the first of his two goals at 18:22 into the first period to make the score 2-2. Victor Piszczek assisted on the tally. McNutt's next tally made the score 4-3 Caledon with 1:19 left in the second period. The Golden Hawks were on a disadvantage when Patrick Savella went off the ice for slashing. Others who scored for Caledon included Chris Smith and Daniel Cafagna, who each put in one. In addition, Caledon received assists from Justin Lollini, Randy Chen, and Steven Klomp, who contributed one a piece.

Tom Denstedt made 26 saves for Erin on 30 shots. The Shamrocks registered two goals on 10 power play opportunities. Erin ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Nicolucci was ejected from the game. Caledon's Eric Pitcher stopped 27 shots out of the 32 that he faced. Team's Mark Smythe, Savella, McNutt, and Cafagna were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
