Schomberg falls to Fergus in overtime, 5-4 (OT)Alder St. Recreation Centre Mon, Dec 30, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
Griffin Heitshu gave the Fergus Devils a 5-4 (OT) victory over the Schomberg Cougars when he scored 4:57 into the extra period. Fergus overcame a three-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Devils was down 4-1 after a power play goal by Schomberg's Blake Culley at 3:24 in the second period. Fergus tied things up at 4-4 on a power play goal by Patrick Snell at 4:38 in the third period. Joshua Machesney was all over the ice for the Devils, as he finished with two goals in the win. Machesney's tallies came at 5:40 into the first period to make the score 1-1 and on the power play 14:39 into the second to make the score 4-2 Schomberg. Fergus kept the Cougars' goalie busy throughout the game, and Taylor Ewart made 44 saves on 49 shots. The Devils' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals. Fergus could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 38 minutes in penalties during the game. Fergus also got points from Snell, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Fergus also got a goal from Mackenzie Cleveland as well. More assists for Fergus came via Joshua Schafer, James Murray, Mike Traves, and Dustin Scheer, who contributed one a piece and Ben Roelofson and Cody Gresswell, who each chipped in two. Schomberg's offense rang up 45 shots on the Devils' net. The Cougars found themselves short handed often, totaling 30 penalty minutes and allowing 12 power plays. Schomberg was held back by its power play unit, which tallied two goals on 12 chances. The Cougars were helped by Justin Formenton, who had one goal and one assist. Formenton scored on the power play 2:51 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Schomberg. Schomberg had taken the advantage when Fergus' Roelofson got sent off for interference. Nicholas Chaykowsky picked up the assist. JP Crescenzi also scored for Schomberg. Other players who recorded assists for Schomberg were Ryley Egerton, who had two and Christian Muenz, Colton Wood, and John Gage, who contributed one a piece. Parker Merkley recorded 41 saves for the Devils. For Fergus, Mathew Clarke was ejected from the game.
