Stayner rolls over Fergus, 6-2Centre Wellington Sportsplex Wed, Jan 22, 2014 Story by Narrative Science.
The Stayner Siskins had a three-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 6-2 win over the Fergus Devils. Ricky Darrell was all over the ice for Stayner, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Darrell scored the first of his two goals at 9:44 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Stayner. Darrell's next tally made the score 4-1 Stayner with 53 seconds left in the second period. Sean Healy assisted on the tally. Fergus' six penalties came back to haunt it, as the Devils let up four goals while on the penalty kill. The Siskins forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and one major for 39 minutes in penalty time. Stayner had been averaging 26.0 minutes in penalties per game. Stayner also got points from Healy, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Kyle Lafreniere, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Stayner included Cooper Martin and Brandon Watson, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for Stayner were Derick Robertson, who had two and Ryan Hassau, Quinton Bruce, Corey DeRose, and Jackson Clarke, who contributed one a piece. Fergus kept the Siskins' goalie busy throughout the game, and Aaron Taylor made 32 saves on 34 shots. The defensemen of the Devils were also effective in Stayner's zone, and came away with two goals. Fergus was led by Mackenzie Cleveland, who tallied two goals. Cleveland scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 1:12 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Stayner. A abuse of officials penalty on DeRose had put the Devils on the power play. Robert Ebach provided the assist. Cleveland's next tally on the power play made the score 6-2 Stayner with zero seconds left in the third period. More assists for Fergus came via Griffin Heitshu, who had one. The Siskins ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Ryan Hyndman was ejected from the game. Parker Merkley made 15 saves for Fergus on 17 shots. The Devils totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-9 on the power play. For Fergus, Dominic Weathall was ejected from the game.
