Cafagna leads Caledon over Midland, 7-2

Behind a great game by Daniel Cafagna, who had one goal and two assists, the Caledon Golden Hawks defeated the Midland Flyers, 7-2.

Cafagna scored 17:12 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Logan Webb provided the assist.

Caledon's penalty kill excelled, as the Golden Hawks gave up zero goals despite allowing eight power plays.

In the losing effort, Midland was led by Darren Nesbitt, who registered two goals. Nesbitt scored the first of his two goals at 7:57 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Webb picked up the assist. Nesbitt's next tally made the score 2-1 Midland with 7:14 left in the second period. Kaden Shearer provided the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 7:11 into the third period. Eight fighting penalties were dished out along with six game misconducts.

Caledon racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 11 minors and two majors for 42 minutes in penalty time. The Golden Hawks had been averaging 30.0 minutes in penalties per game. Caledon stifled the Flyers' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Midland was unable to stop the Golden Hawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Caledon eventually piled up 42 shots on goal. The Golden Hawks surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Caledon has scored at the pace of 3.9 goals per game during the current campaign.

Caledon also got points from Adam Breen, who also tallied one goal and two assists, Christian Bonaldi, who also had one goal and one assist, and Steven Klomp, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Caledon also had goals scored by Derek Czech, Randy Chen, and Zack Worth, who scored one goal each. More assists for Caledon came via Cody Forgione, who had three and Kyle Lee, Justin Lollini, and Chris Smith, who each chipped in one.

The Flyers were often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and two majors for 36 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 25.0 minutes per game Midland had been spending in the box. The Flyers' penalty kill unit could not stop the Golden Hawks' power play, which converted on four of five opportunities.

In addition, Midland received assists from Nick Heins, who had one.

Caledon's Chris Vellucci stopped 27 shots out of the 29 that he faced. Team's Steve Zeppieri and Forgione were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Marco Colangelo made 35 saves for Midland on 42 shots. For the Flyers, Jake Evans and Matt Smith were ejected from the contest.
