Stayner outlasts Schomberg, 5-3

The Stayner Siskins and the Schomberg Cougars were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Stayner made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-3.

No lead was more than two goals during the contest, and the winning goal was scored by Corey DeRose at 8:27 of the second period.

Schomberg's power play was ineffective against the Siskins' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Stayner was led by Jesse Anderson, who tallied one goal. Anderson scored 12:09 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Stayner. DeRose assisted on the tally.

The Siskins kept the Cougars' goalie busy throughout the game, and Taylor Ewart made 46 saves on 51 shots. Team could not crack Schomberg's penalty kill and was held to two power play goals while having nine opportunities to play with the man advantage. Stayner found itself short handed often, totaling 54 penalty minutes and allowing eight power plays.

Stayner additionally got points from DeRose, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Jeff Hamm, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Stayner included Trevor Franklin and Cooper Martin, who each put in one. More assists for Stayner came via Dakota Hynes, who had two and Kyle Lafreniere and Ricky Darrell, who each chipped in one.

The Siskins were unable to stop the Cougars from sending pucks towards the net, and Schomberg eventually piled up 37 shots on goal. The Cougars were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 54 penalty minutes.

Schomberg was led by John Gage, who racked up two goals. Gage scored the first of his two goals at 16:55 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Blake Culley picked up the assist. Gage's next tally made the score 2-2 with 15:08 left in the second period. The Cougars had gotten the advantage when Stayner's Lafreniere was sent off for slashing. Christian Muenz assisted on the tally. Ryley Egerton also scored for Schomberg. In addition, Schomberg received assists from Spenser Jones and Justin Formenton, who contributed one a piece.

Aaron Taylor made 34 saves for the Siskins on 37 shots. Stayner ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Derick Robertson was ejected from the game.
