Orillia pulls away in second, rolls over Midland, 7-0Rama MASK Mon, Nov 18, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Orillia Terriers scored three goals in the second period to pull away from the Midland Flyers and clinch a 7-0 win. Gordie Weiss spearheaded the defensive effort for Orillia, as he did not allow a puck past him and made 36 saves for the shutout. Weiss certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.65 entering the contest. Midland's 12 penalties came back to haunt it, as the Flyers let up four goals while on the penalty kill. Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 6:12 into the third period. Eight fighting penalties were dished out along with six game misconducts. The the Terriers penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and three majors for 43 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 34.0 minutes per game Orillia had been spending in the box. The Terriers stifled Midland's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Flyers were unable to stop Orillia from sending pucks towards the net, and the Terriers eventually piled up 54 shots on goal. Orillia surpassed its usual scoring output this season. The Terriers have scored at the pace of 3.4 goals per game during the current campaign. Orillia was helped by Ryan Tucci, who tallied two goals and one assist. Tucci scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 10:31 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Orillia. The Terriers had taken the advantage when Midland's Chris Goodfellow got sent off for high sticking. Zac Hele provided the assist. Tucci's next tally on the power play made the score 2-0 Orillia with 13:04 left in the second period. Orillia also got points from Marty Lawlor, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and Josh Allan, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Orillia included Daniel Lee, who had two and Jason Binnie and Hunter Makey, who scored one goal each. More assists for Orillia came via Nathan Beers, Jason Stone, Konnor Blimke, and Jake Shaw, who contributed one a piece. The Flyers racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with nine minors and three majors for 43 minutes in penalty time. Midland had been averaging 23.0 minutes in penalties per game. The Flyers could not produce up to they normal offensive output. Midland puts an average of 2.6 pucks into the net per game. The Flyers' offense rang up 36 shots on Orillia's net. Midland's power play unit failed to produce, and was held to zero goals on nine chances. Team's Beers, Denny Benson, and Lee were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Marco Colangelo rejected 47 shots on goal for the Flyers. For Midland, Brandon Stratton, Neal Burgess, and James Hermelyn were ejected from the contest.
