Fergus uses shootout to best Orillia, 7-6 (1-0 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Fergus Devils defeated the Orillia Terriers in a shootout 7-6 (1-0 SO).

The shootout featured six attempts between both teams.

Fergus overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. The Devils trailed 6-5 after a power play goal by Orillia's Jason Binnie at 5:13 in the third period. Fergus tied things up at 6-6 on a power play goal by James Murray at 18:27 in the third period.

The Devils forced the Terriers goalie Gordie Weiss to work between the pipes, taking 55 shots. Fergus outdid its season average for goals scored. This season, the Devils average 3.6 goals per contest.

Fergus additionally got points from Mike Traves, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and Mikael Ruffini, who also had one goal and one assist. Fergus also got a goal from Robert Ebach as well. More assists for Fergus came via Griffin Heitshu, who had three and Patrick Snell and Joshua Machesney, who each chipped in one.

Orillia's offense rang up 39 shots on Fergus' net. The Terriers surpassed their usual scoring output this season. Orillia averages 3.4 goals per game.

The Terriers were helped by Jake Shaw, who registered two goals. Shaw scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 11:44 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Orillia. Orillia had gotten the advantage when the Devils' Snell was sent off for interference. Jason Stone provided the assist. Shaw's next tally on the power play made the score 3-2 Orillia with 15:55 left in the second period. Binnie picked up the assist. Orillia also got points from Ryan Tucci, who also finished with one goal and one assist, Binnie, who also grabbed one goal and two assists to lead the team in points, and Josh Allan, who also had one goal and one assist. Haden Hiles also scored for Orillia. Other players who recorded assists for Orillia were Marty Lawlor, Tyler Mason, and Daniel Lee, who contributed one a piece.

Alex Elliott made 33 saves for Fergus on 39 shots. The Devils incurred 22 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Weiss recorded 48 saves for the Terriers. Orillia incurred 24 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
