Early goals doom Huntsville, falls to Fergus, 7-0Centre Wellington Sportsplex Sun, Oct 20, 2013 Story by Narrative Science.
The Fergus Devils opened up a five-goal lead after the first period and did not look back en route to a 7-0 over the Huntsville Otters. Alex Elliott frustrated Huntsville's offense all game, and stopped 30 shots en route to a shutout. Elliott managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 3.1 prior to the game. Mike Traves was all over the ice for Fergus, as he tallied one goal and two assists in the win. Traves scored on the power play 6:34 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Fergus. The Devils had gained a power play chance when Andrew Cooke was whistled for tripping. Sam Natale picked up the assist. Fergus' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on 12 Huntsville power plays. The Devils forced the Otters goalie Connor Christianson to work between the pipes, taking 42 shots. Fergus' goal total was higher than its season average. The Devils have scored at the pace of 3.5 goals per game during the current campaign. The defensemen of Fergus were also effective in Huntsville's zone, and came away with two goals. Fergus also got points from Patrick Snell, who also grabbed two goals and one assist, James Murray, who also registered one goal and one assist, and Natale, who also had one goal and one assist. Fergus also got a goal from Joshua Schafer as well. In addition, Fergus received assists from Robert Ebach, who had two, Griffin Heitshu, who had three, and Cole Bradley and Cody Gresswell, who contributed one a piece. The Otters struggled on the penalty kill, allowing the Devils to score three power play goals on five chances. Huntsville was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 28 penalty minutes. Fergus incurred 50 minutes in penalty time with 10 minors. The Devils ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Mikael Ruffini was ejected from the game. Connor Christianson made 35 saves for the Otters on 42 shots.
