Schomberg uses early goal to top Fergus, 5-3

The Schomberg Cougars took the lead against the Fergus Devils in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 5-3 victory.

Schomberg took over the lead for good with a goal by Blake Culley at 26 seconds in the first period. John Gage assisted on the tally.

JP Crescenzi had two goals to lead the Cougars to victory. Crescenzi's tallies came at 1:15 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Schomberg and on the power play 16:59 into the third to make the score 5-3 Schomberg.

Schomberg's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Fergus power plays. The Cougars kept Fergus' goalie busy throughout the game, and Alex Elliott made 53 saves on 58 shots. Schomberg could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 36 minutes in penalties during the game.

Schomberg also got points from Culley, who also had one goal and one assist. Schomberg also got a goal from Christian Muenz as well. Other players who recorded assists for Schomberg were Brandon Yorke, who had two and Cailean Thornton-Wilson, Ryley Egerton, Bobby Quinn, Derek Neilly, and Nicholas Chaykowsky, who contributed one a piece.

The Devils forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up 12 minors and one major for 49 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 36.0 minutes per game Fergus had been spending in the box.

The Devils were helped by Mike Traves, who finished with one goal. Traves scored 8:28 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Schomberg. Ben Roelofson picked up the assist. Fergus additionally got points from Roelofson, who also racked up one goal and one assist and Griffin Heitshu, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. In addition, Fergus received assists from Mikael Ruffini, James Murray, and Sam Natale, who each chipped in one.

Garett Taylor made 21 saves for the Cougars on 24 shots. Schomberg registered three goals on 12 power play opportunities. Team's Joshua Schafer, Mackenzie Cleveland, and Cody Haw were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
