Fergus boosted by Merkley's play in net, beats Midland 4-1

The Fergus Devils relied on the sparkling performance of Parker Merkley in net to grab a 4-1 win against the Midland Flyers.

Fergus pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 38 penalty minutes.

The Devils were led by Mikael Ruffini, who tallied one goal. Ruffini scored 8:23 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Fergus. Cody Gresswell picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 7:59 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

Fergus' offense rang up 32 shots on Midland's net. The Devils was shut out on the power play, going scoring scoreless on 10 chances with a man advantage. Fergus' defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals.

Griffin Heitshu also scored for Fergus. Other players who recorded assists for Fergus were Mike Traves, who had one.

The the Flyers penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and three majors for 47 minutes in penalty time. Midland surpassed its season average of 18.0 penalty minutes per game. The Flyers stifled the Devils' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Midland kept Fergus' goalie busy throughout the game, and Merkley made 31 saves on 32 shots.

The Flyers were led by Matt Brown, who scored the team's only goal. Brown scored on the power play 16:45 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Fergus. A tripping penalty on Jeryme Arnold had put Midland on the power play. Nick Heins assisted on the tally.

Team's Heitshu, Dominic Weathall, and Mackenzie Cleveland were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Marco Colangelo recorded 28 saves for the Flyers. Midland registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. For the Flyers, Jon Meeks and Bruce Brown were ejected from the contest.
