Caledon penalty kill dominates in 5-2 defeat of Stayner

The Stayner Siskins failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Caledon Golden Hawks shook off a number of penalties to win, 5-2.

Caledon was sparked by Daniel Cafagna, who tallied one goal. Cafagna scored on the power play 5:50 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Caledon. The Golden Hawks had gotten the advantage when Stayner's Dakota Hynes was sent off for checking from behind. Mark Smythe provided the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 12:25 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Caledon was often in penalty trouble, totaling 11 minors and two majors for 62 minutes in penalty time. The Golden Hawks had been averaging 25.0 minutes in penalties per game. Caledon's offense rang up 36 shots on the Siskins' net.

Caledon also got points from Christian Bonaldi, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Justin Lollini, who also grabbed one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Caledon also got a goal from Patrick Savella as well. Other players who recorded assists for Caledon were Jacob Arsenault, Adam Breen, Derek Czech, and Chris Smith, who contributed one a piece.

Stayner forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and three majors for 63 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 31.0 minutes per game the Siskins had been spending in the box. Stayner was held below its usual level of production. The Siskins average 4.6 goals per game.

Stayner was helped by Jeff Hamm, who racked up one goal. Hamm scored 29 seconds into the third period to make the score 2-1 Stayner. Ricky Darrell assisted on the tally. Mac Flewelling also scored for Stayner. More assists for Stayner came via Brandon Watson, who had one.

Eric Pitcher rejected 22 shots on goal for the Golden Hawks. Caledon registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. Team's Savella, James Pitsadiotas, and Cody Forgione were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Aaron Taylor recorded 31 saves for the Siskins. Stayner registered one goal on eight power play opportunities. For the Siskins, Hynes, Derick Robertson, Eric Maeker, and Jason Seeley were ejected from the contest.
