London holds on for 5-3 win against St. Thomas

The St. Thomas Stars tried to dig themselves out of a three-goal hole, but the London Nationals held on for a 5-3 victory.

London took a 5-2 lead during the third period, only to have St. Thomas storm back on a Scott Mitchell goal 13:27 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

Pieter Schinkelshoek was all over the ice for the Nationals, as he registered two goals in the win. Schinkelshoek scored on the power play at 1:50 into the first period to make the score 1-0 London and again while on the power play 13:57 into the second to make the score 4-1 London.

London managed to stay out of the box for the most part, totaling six minors and one majorfor 17 minutes in penalty time. The Nationals finished with less than their 26 minutes average penalties per game. London forced the Stars goalie Michael Slaats to work between the pipes, taking 42 shots. Team could not crack St. Thomas' penalty kill and was held to two power play goals while having nine opportunities to play with the man advantage.

London additionally got points from Daniel Cameron, who also grabbed one goal and two assists. Noah Schwartz also scored for London. In addition, London received assists from Aaron Dartch, who had two and Jake Monaghan, Scott Lombardi, Tyler Bryden, and Derek Todosichuk, who contributed one each.

The Stars racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with nine minors and one major for 23 minutes in penalty time. St. Thomas surpassed its season average of 20 penalty minutes per game. The Stars' offense efficiently hummed along to the tune of 47 shots put on the Nationals' net.

St. Thomas was helped by Colin Mooney, who racked up one goal. Mooney scored 14:30 into the second period to make the score 4-2 London. Blake Thomas assisted on the tally. St. Thomas got a goal from Davis Boyer as well. More assists for St. Thomas came via Matt Schurr, Thomas Kohler, Marcus Michalski, Brett Hope, and Drew Collinson, who each chipped in one.

Taylor Edwards made 44 saves for London on 47 shots. The Nationals ran into disciplinary problems during the contest, and Todosichuk was ejected from the game. Slaats recorded 37 saves for the Stars. St. Thomas registered one goal on seven power play opportunities. For the Stars, Braden Hellems was ejected from the game.
