Waterloo vanquishes Cambridge in shootout, 5-4 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Waterloo Siskins defeated the Cambridge Winter Hawks in a shootout 5-4 (2-1 SO).

The shootout featured eight attempts between both teams. Cambridge's shootout goal was scored by Josh Timpano. Waterloo also got a shootout goal from Adam Campagnolo.

Both teams had a hard time staying out of the box, and they combined for 20 penalties during the game.

The Siskins forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and one major for 41 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 24 minutes per game Waterloo had been spending in the box. The Winter Hawks were unable to stop the Siskins from sending pucks towards the net, and Waterloo eventually piled up 45 shots on goal.

The Siskins were helped by Sean Fennell, who finished with two goals. Fennell scored the first of his two goals at 12:30 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Mike Van Ooteghem picked up the assist. Fennell's next tally made the score 3-1 Waterloo with 4:44 left in the second period. Waterloo had gotten the advantage when Cambridge's Brennon Pearce was sent off for roughing. Kyle Platzer provided the assist. Waterloo also got points from Platzer, who also had one goal and one assist. Waterloo got a goal from Andrew Brubacher as well. More assists for Waterloo came via Evan Buehler, who had one and Campagnolo, who had two.

The Winter Hawks forced the Siskins goalie Marc Williams to work between the pipes, taking 40 shots. Cambridge was often in penalty trouble, as it ended with 10 minors and one major for 25 minutes in penalty time. The leading offender was Timpano, who totaled eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.

Cambridge additionally got points from Pearce, who also racked up one goal and two assists. Cambridge also had goals scored by Cameron Pentsa, who had one and Cody Gratton, who had two. In addition, Cambridge received assists from Darcy Meyer and Anthony Guido, who contributed one each.

Williams turned away 36 pucks between the pipes for Waterloo. The Siskins registered two goals on seven power play opportunities. Waterloo ran into disciplinary problems during the contest, and Fennell was ejected from the game. Lucas Machalski recorded 40 saves for the Winter Hawks. Cambridge registered one goal on five power play opportunities. For the Winter Hawks, Marselis Subban and Jordan Pettitt were ejected from the contest.
