Waterloo vanquishes Guelph in shootout, 6-5 (2-1 SO)

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Waterloo Siskins defeated the Guelph Hurricanes in a shootout 6-5 (2-1 SO).

The shootout lasted for 12 attempts between the teams. Guelph's shootout goal was scored by Shane Kinsella. In addition to the clincher, Waterloo got a shootout goal from Kyle Platzer.

The Siskins overcame a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Waterloo was down 4-2 after a goal by the Hurricanes' Brandon Stewart at 12:29 in the second period. The Siskins tied things up at 5-5 on a goal by Mitch Klie at 14:20 in the third period.

Waterloo got the win thanks to a great game by Mike Van Ooteghem, who had two goals and two assists. Van Ooteghem scored the first of his two goals at 23 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Waterloo. Sean Fennell assisted on the tally. Van Ooteghem's next tally made the score 4-3 Guelph with 17:27 left in the third period. A unsportsmanlike conduct call on Connor Voigt put the Siskins on the penalty kill. Fennell provided the assist.

Waterloo kept Guelph's goalie busy throughout the game, and Colin Furlong made 39 saves on 45 shots. The Siskins bested their season scoring average. Waterloo averages three goals per game. The Siskins were forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as they racked up 26 penalty minutes. The leading offender was Voigt, who totaled 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one misconduct.

Waterloo additionally got points from Evan Buehler, who also had one goal and one assist and Van Ooteghem, who also racked up two goals and two assists. Waterloo got a goal from Platzer as well. In addition, Waterloo received assists from Adam Campagnolo, who had two and Andrew Brubacher and Eric Fischer, who contributed one each.

The Hurricanes forced Waterloo goalie Marc Williams to work between the pipes, taking 40 shots. Guelph had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just two goals on nine chances.

The Hurricanes were helped by Mike Iacocca, who registered two goals and one assist. Iacocca scored the first of his two goals at 6:13 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Guelph. Chris Taylor assisted on the tally. Iacocca's next tally made the score 3-1 Guelph with 9:33 left in the first period. Guelph had taken the advantage when the Siskins' Voigt got sent off for hooking. Kinsella provided the assist. Guelph also got points from Stewart, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Iacocca, who also grabbed two goals and one assist. Nic MacEachern also scored for Guelph. Other players who recorded assists for Guelph were Daniel Cotroneo, Dylan Wood, Mike Charbonneau, and Chad Herron, who each chipped in one.

Williams turned away 35 pucks between the pipes for Waterloo. The Siskins registered two goals on four power play opportunities. The Hurricanes incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
