Leamington survives LaSalle comeback, wins 6-5

The Leamington Flyers survived a determined comeback attempt by the LaSalle Vipers on the way to a 6-5 win.

Leamington took a 6-4 lead during the third period, only to have LaSalle storm back on a Dylan Denomme goal 14:59 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

Cheyne Matheson had two goals and one assist to lead the Flyers. Matheson scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 18:22 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Leamington. A charging penalty on Dylan Seguin had put Leamington on the power play. Kyle Bowman picked up the assist. Matheson's next tally on the power play made the score 3-2 Leamington with 19:23 left in the third period. Colin Greeley provided the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 13:39 into the first period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Flyers racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 11 minors and two majors for 42 minutes in penalty time. Leamington surpassed its season average of 19 penalty minutes per game. The Flyers' offense efficiently hummed along to the tune of 33 shots put on the Vipers' net.

Leamington additionally got points from Matheson, who also tallied two goals and one assist and Tyler Quigley, who also had one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Leamington included Tony Spidalieri, who had one and Nicholas Nicodemo, who had two. More assists for Leamington came via Brett Babkirk, Nick Beaune, and Mitchell Amante, who contributed one each.

LaSalle was often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and two majors for 36 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 26 minutes per game the Vipers had been spending in the box. Leamington was unable to stop LaSalle from sending pucks towards the net, and the Vipers eventually piled up 36 shots on goal. Team could not crack the Flyers' penalty kill and was held to two power play goals while having 10 opportunities to play with the man advantage.

LaSalle also got points from Brad Carroll, who also registered one goal and one assist, Patrick Murphy, who also racked up one goal and one assist, and Seguin, who also registered one goal and one assist. Jonathan Woelk also scored for LaSalle. Other players who recorded assists for LaSalle were Ryan Speers, who had two and Chad Shepley, Daniel Slipchuk, Scott Prier, and Kyle Quick, who each chipped in one.

Greeley turned away 31 pucks between the pipes for Leamington. The Flyers registered three goals on eight power play opportunities. Team's Amante and Adam Hughes were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. LaSalle's Jordan Dekort stopped 27 shots out of the 33 that he faced. For the Vipers, Hunter Smith, Kevin Curridor, and Eric Noel were ejected from the contest.
