High School Coaches Get Into the Game

From the basketball court to the football field to the baseball diamond, team sports have more to offer than lay-ups, field goals, and home runs. Today, more than 2,100 high school coaches across the nation are stepping up to the plate in the fight against cancer by joining the Coaches vs. Cancer team.

Cancer impacts everyone – our family members, neighbors, friends, coworkers, and even our children and students. When a cancer diagnosis is received, it takes teamwork – from the patient, caregiver, and physician – to successfully fight the disease. Similarly, Coaches vs. Cancer uses teamwork to tackle this formidable opponent.

Coaches vs. Cancer Stat Sheet

  • Founded in 1993 by Coach Norm Stewart as a collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
  • Coaches vs. Cancer has raised $80 million for the fight against cancer.
  • More than 85 Division I, II, and III college coaches  across the country participate.
  • More than 2,000 high school coaches have joined the movement.

Participation is easy – this school year, designate one regularly scheduled game during your season to benefit Coaches vs. Cancer. Then, leading up to and during the game, use your leadership position in the school to share the importance of cancer prevention and making healthy lifestyle choices with students, faculty, and your local community through educational and fundraising activities. It's fun. It's easy. And it's for a great cause.

But Coaches vs. Cancer isn’t just for coaches. While the program does focus on team sports, other groups – teachers, student clubs, and even parents – can get involved. “All it takes is finding people with the same passion to fight cancer,” explains Angela Clay, district nurse for the Panhandle School District in Panhandle, Texas, and a two-time breast cancer survivor. “I’ve received great help from the elementary, junior high, and high school personnel who share my passion to find a cure. Plus, many of our National Honor Society students help as part of their service project and because it has personal meaning for them.”
