HOLYOKE - When the Blue Sox were down 10-3 in the early goings of Saturday’s matchup with the Sanford Mainers, a new addition to the lineup acted as the spark plug for a comeback.
Right fielder Isaac Wachsmann belted two home runs in the bottom of the third inning, allowing Valley to take their first lead of the day.
After launching a homer to start the inning’s scoring, the Blue Sox batted through their order to bring Wachsmann back up to the plate. In his second at bat of the inning, Wachsmann capped off the eight run side with a second home run.
“Just trying to be up on time, and kind of just seeing it out,” said Wachsmann of his work today.
“I worked a lot with our hitting coach [Charlie Ludwick], we were in the cage for like an hour and a half, just working through some stuff. I found a couple things I really liked and took that over to the game, and now for sure, I am going to keep working on those things.”
Wachsmann has accumulated a batting average of .240 during his time with the Blue Sox, picking up six hits in seven games. The Creighton outfielder and first baseman has also stolen two bases for Valley.
Wachsmann is a later addition to the team, making his debut a week ago on July 12th.
“It’s been great. Obviously, I hadn’t had any at bats since the spring, and it’s still early, so I’m still kind of getting my feet under me,” Wachsmann said.
“But it’s been super fun. We got a great group of guys, the coaches and the guys have made it really easy to make a smooth transition and they got a lot of confidence in me. Just allowing me to play free, and play like myself and experiment, has been a blast so far.”
Blue Sox manager Endy Morales spoke about Wachsmann’s presence on the team since his arrival.
“It’s incredible man. He’s just getting started, he’s a super talented guy, and when pitchers make mistakes really good hitters make them pay,” said Morales.
“[Wachsmann’s arrival] has been huge,” Morales added. “It gives us that guy in the lineup that, when the bottom of the lineup gets on and you get back to the top, you know there’s a guy there that can get the job done that is as cool as a cucumber and can get his swing off.”
Wachsmann’s heroics played a key part in Valley’s 14-11 win over Sanford. The Blue Sox record moves to 16-19, and their playoff push continues July 23rd when they travel to Bristol to face the Blues.
