Blue Sox Open July with 4-2 Win Over Mainers

SANFORD, Maine - The Valley Blue Sox held off a late push from the Sanford Mainers to capture a 4-2 victory Tuesday night at Goodall Park. The win puts Valley securely back above .500 at 11-9 as they continue their playoff push in the Southern Division.

Gregory Shaw had a powerful start on the mound, pitching five no-hit innings while striking out four and walking two. The team's starting pitcher gave the Blue Sox offense plenty of opportunities to build an early lead.

Michael Elko got the scoring started for Valley in the second inning by scoring the game's first run. Valley broke the seal in the top of the fifth thanks to Michael O'Conor and Chris Carson both finding home and extending the lead to 3-0. Andrew Loikits also contributed to the eventful fifth inning with an RBI single that gave his squad another run, pushing the lead to 4-0.

Sanford showed signs of life in the bottom of the fifth when Vharlie Jones crossed home plate to make it 4-1. The Valley bullpen held strong despite some drama late in the contest. Reliever Andrew Basel threw a scoreless sixth inning, and Jack Wajda was given the task of pitching the last couple of innings. Though Jones delivered another run in the bottom of the 9th to trim the deficit down to 4-2. Reliever Jack Wajda regrouped and closed out the game, securing the win.

The Blue Sox not only improved their positioning in the Southern Division but also created momentum for the rest of their quadruple header. Valley will look to keep rolling through their four games in the next five days when they travel to take on the Upper Valley Nighthawks tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.
