Pilots one win away from third straight championship

by Lauren Petri

August 4th

The Anchorage Glacier Pilots flew past the Mat Su Miners in game one of the Top of the World Series Championship. Will Bermudez got the runs started in the third with his first home run of the postseason. The Miners quickly followed suit as Alex Vergara brought home Kaleb Hannahs to tie the game. The Pilots took the lead in the sixth and extended the lead in the seventh as Bermudez, Elijah Rodriguez, and Andrew Nykoluk came around to score. Starting pitcher for the Pilots, Ian Torpey, pitched six and one-third innings, striking out four, and allowing one run on six hits and four walks to earn the win. Max Martin earned an eight-out save, striking out three, walking two, and allowing no runs on one hit in two and two-thirds innings. Winning this game snapped the Pilots’ 3-game losing streak against the Miners and are one game away from their third championship, but the Miners will be trying their hardest to force a game three. Game tomorrow, 4pm AKDT, Hermon Brothers Field.

Final Score: Anchorage Glacier Pilots 4, Mat Su Miners 1
