Pilots to play Miners in Championship series

by Lauren Petri

August 3rd

The rubber match between the Peninsula Oilers and the Mat Su Miners started as one of the best pitchers duels you could have. Oilers’ Mose Hayes, after a relief appearance last night, pitched six innings, not allowing a run until the fifth. Miners’ Ethan Lyke pitched eight innings, not allowing a run until the seventh. Mario Bejarano closed out the game, three up, three down, to earn the Miners a spot in the championship. As for the Miners offense, Kaden Carpenter went 2 for 3 with an RBI triple, Nolan Tucker went 2 for 4 with an RBI double, and filling in for Kaleb Hannahs who had a well-deserved off day after 10 straight games at third, Alex Thurston went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI single. Safe to say, the Miners bats are hot heading into the last two or three days. As we say goodbye to the Oilers, it’s important to note the tenacity of all these players, making it so close to the end with so few players, and only one true pitcher left. They have a lot of heart, and we wish them nothing but the best in their careers moving forward.

The Pilots and Miners will face off in a best of three series at Hermon Brothers Field August 4th-6th.

Final Score: Mat Su Miners 6, Peninsula Oilers 2
