Mitch Moreland is a current first baseman for the Oakland Athletics and has previously played for the Texas Rangers and San Diego Padres, however he is most known for his time as a member of the Boston Red Sox.

While in high school he was a Louisville Slugger All-American after a 7-1 pitching record while hitting .456 batting average. After that he attended Mississippi State University, where he hit .343He was selected by the Rangers in the 17th round of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft.

Moreland played for Danville Dans in 2005 and the Clinton LumberKings while they were a part of the Midwest League.

Mitch made his Major League Baseball debut July 29, 2019 versus the Oakland Athletics, he connected for a single off of Vin Mazzaro in his very first at bat in his major league career.

His first career home run came off of veteran Josh Beckett of the Red Sox on August 13th, 2010.

In Game three of the 2010 World Series Moreland hit a second inning, three-run home run off of Jonathan Sanchez, making him the first Rangers player in the series to hit a home run.

Moreland’s first career walk-off home run came on June 21st, 2011 during an outing against Houston Astros pitching Enerio Del Rosario.

June 9, 2012 Moreland became the second AL player to hit a home run out of the park and into AT&T Park’s McCovey Cove. The home run was a 428-foot dinger off of Ryan Vogelsong, this was also the first pinch hit home run hit into the cove by a non-giant’s player.

2018 was a career year for Moreland as he was named as an AL reserve 1st baseman for the 2018 All-Star Game, he had been hitting .288/.258/.525 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs in 71 games so far that year. In the post season Moreland hit .294 for the Red Sox who went on to win the World Series over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

2019 Moreland spent time with several stays on the injured list with a lower back strain and a right quad strain. He only appeared in 91 games with Boston. He and Boston agreed to a new contract for 2020 and was traded August 30th to the Padres for minor leaguers Jeisson Rosario and Hudson Potts. Moreland played only 20 games with the padres.

Most recently Moreland had singed a 1-year contract with the Oakland Athletics and hit .227 with 10 home runs and 30 RBIs

 

Outside of baseball Moreland is married with four children, they reside in Birmingham, Alabama and own a farm in Mississippi.
