Record after Coaching Change
On July 20th the River Dragons took the rare step of making a managerial change during the season. At that time, General Manager Dallas Martz added “interim field manager” to his title. A triumvirate of assistants including Butch Chapman, Blake Vandiver and Blake Wilson overall various aspects of the dugout.
Over the final 11 games the team went 5-6, playing at a .454 pace. They had previously been playing at a .341 pace.
If the team had played at a .454 clip all season that would’ve resulted in 25-30 record.
Gone, Not Forgotten
Dominic Decker – Before he was shut down due to a hand injury, Decker was challenging for the league’s batting title with a legit chance at not only finishing over .400 in average but over .500% in on-base percentage. His season ended in mid July.
R.J. LaRocco – An injury ended LaRocco’s season only a few days after Decker’s and only a couple games after setting a new team record in doubles with 13
Kyle Athmer – His final game is one of legend for the River Dragons. On July 7th he took a perfect game into the seventh inning at Danville. Eventually he and Dimtri Ivetic combined to allow only three hits in a shutout performance and one of the best on the mound in team history. Athmer was shut down for the summer as he reached an innings limit but not before that.
Fewer Games
The 2023 schedule already featured two fewer games (58 as opposed to 60) and thanks to three cancellations the River Dragons only played 55. Alton’s July 24th game at Thrillville was cancelled after a Thrillville player’s passing earlier that day. Games on July 29th and August 5th were rained out an unable to be rescheduled.
