CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - The Prospect League announced its 2021 Postseason All-Stars and awards winners Wednesday morning, among them were Paints players Trey Smith and Ruben Ramirez, making the East Conference's All-Star teams as an outfielder and relief pitcher, respectively. The all-star teams were voted on by the field managers from the Prospect League's 16 teams.
Trey Smith, an outfielder from the University of Indianapolis, completed his second-consecutive season with the Paints in 2021, playing in 48 regular-season games and owning the Prospect League's fourth-best batting average at .358, collecting 62 hits, 14 doubles, two triples, five home runs, including a grand slam, and 33 RBIs. Smith also stole 15 bases on 18 attempts. His 62 hits ranked eighth in the league, 42 runs scored ranked 10th, 14 doubles ranked sixth. Smith also made several outfield assists, throwing out opposing runners from right field.
Ruben Ramirez, a pitcher from Point Park University, used his mid-90's fastball as a weapon for the Paints out of the bullpen this summer, going 3-1 with a 2.31 ERA, collecting five saves over 15 appearances. Ramirez struck out 29 batters over 23 1/3 innings, walking just five.
Late in the season, Ramirez signed a professional contract with the Billings Mustangs of the Pioneer League, an independent MLB Partner League. After a short stint, Ramirez was signed by the Kansas City Royals and assigned to their rookie league team in the Arizona Complex League. August 24, Ramirez was promoted to the Royals' High-A affiliate Quad Cities River Bandits.
