Burlington jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Ben Nippolt led off with a walk and Jackson Jones mashed a one-out shot for his 18th home run of the season. Lafayette responded with two home runs of their own in the visitor’s fourth.
The Aviators showboated around the bases as they took a 3-2 lead. They verbally taunted the Burlington fans, but that all ended as quickly as it began. Burlington starter Ricky Arthur settled in. Daniel Perdzock threw a scoreless 7th in relief. Grady Gorgen came on in the eighth, scattered three hits and earned his second win on the season to run his record to 2-1.
After Jones bomb in the first, Lafayette starter Jorge Oleaga threw two balls to the big lefty in his next time up, the third inning. Manager Mike Keernan decided not to face the league home run leader for a full at bat and ordered an intentional walk, in spite of there already being two outs in the frame. Jones would double his next time up, settling on a 2-3 day, with 2 runs batted in and two scored.
Dylan Hale won it for the Bees in the bottom of the 8th with a monster, no doubt drive of reliever Wil Moritz, who took the loss. Hale homer sailed deep over the right field wall scoring Jones ahead of him.
The Bees are off on Monday then travel to Clinton and Quincy Tuesday and Wednesday.
