The Burlington Bees had a solid night of offense, but the Lafayette Aviators were better and beat the Bees 10-6.
Lafayette started the scoring in the second with four straight hits. Tavan Shahidi and Mike Snyder hit back to back doubles to score the first two runs. Oscar Ponce made it a 4-0 game on a moon shot home run to left for his second of the season.
The Bees got within a run thanks to a three run third inning. Burlington loaded the bases on a pair of singles from Zane Zielinski and Sam Monroe. Chase Honeycutt reached on an error. Ben Nippolt delivered with a two run single to make it 4-2. Jackson Jones would drive in the third run on a double play.
Lafayette responded with a run in the fourth on a two-out RBI single from Dakota Kennedy, The Bees managed to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases on three straight hits from Joey Fitzgerald, Zielinksi, and Monroe. Fitzgerald would later score on a wild pitch, and a sac fly RBI from Lincoln Riley made the score 5-5.
The Aviators had an answerer to the Bees success with a three run fifth. A fielder’s choice RBI from Gary Lora, and a pair of RBI singles from Mike Snyder and Oscar Ponce made the score 8-5. Lafayette added another two runs in the 8th on a pair of RBI singles from Jaren Shelby and Tavan Shahidi.
Burlington managed one more run in the 9th on a two-out RBI single from Dylan Hale for his third RBI of the season.
Brady McLean suffered his first loss of the season in his first start. McLean went five innings, allowed eight runs, 11 hits, four walks, and struck out two. Treyjen Meza earned a win in just his third relief outing of the season for Lafayette. Meza went four innings, allowed just a hit, a walk, and struck out nine.
Ben Nippolt finished the night 1-3 with two RBIs and two walks. Burlington got two hits each from Zielinski, Monroe, and Fitzgerald. Lafayette got the most production from their nine hitter Oscar Ponce, who went 3-5 with a home run, three RBIs, and a run scored. The Bees will wrap their homestand against Lafayette tomorrow at 2 p.m.
