CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - The Chillicothe Paints, presented by Adena Health System, opened the week with a 13-5 loss to the Lafayette Aviators in a game that featured eight combined home runs and 25 hits Tuesday night at VA Memorial Stadium.
Lafayette (11-1, 30-10) hit the first of those home runs, a three-run shot by Drew Behling in the top of the first, capping a six-run inning for the visitors.
Chillicothe (4-6, 21-18) got its first run of the night on a leadoff home run from Ben Gbur in the bottom of the second, cutting the Lafayette lead to 6-1.
The Aviators got it back in the top of the third, thanks to a leadoff home run from Jayson Newman, restoring the margin to six runs at 7-1.
Alex Ludwick led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple, but was thrown out at the plate for the inning's first out, allowing Kent Reeser to reach on a fielder's choice. After Reeser stole second base, Gbur reached on an infield hit, moving Reeser to third. Jackson Feltner grounded out to shortstop, scoring Reeser and cutting the deficit to 7-2. Nathan Karaffa then stepped in and hit a two-run home run, making it a three-run game at 7-4, but that's as close as the Paints would get.
Lafayette scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth, then hit two more home runs in the seventh, a solo home run by Mike Snyder and a three-run bomb from Allbry Major, extending the Aviators' advantage to 12-4.
Ludwick led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run to right field, giving the Paints their fifth run.
Newman led off the ninth with a solo home run, his second of the night, finishing the scoring with the Aviators winning 13-5.
Jake Norris (0-3) started for the Paints, allowing seven runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out three. He took the loss for Chillicothe. Mitch Mulheim threw two innings, allowing one unearned run on no hits, walking one, hitting one and striking out four. Tyler Ronevich pitched two innings, allowing four runs on four hits, hitting one and striking out three. Marhsall Pile pitched the final inning for Chillicothe, allowing a run on two hits, walking two and striking out one.
Lafayette starter Zach Smith did not qualify for the win as he pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out six. Jean Muntaner (4-1) earned the win in relief, he allowed one run on three hits, walking one and striking out seven. Jackson Dannelley threw the final inning for the Aviators, giving up one hit and striking out one.
Chillicothe plays two games against the West Virginia Miners in Beckley Wednesday. The first game is a continuation of a suspended game that started June 13. The Paints lead that game 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning. That game is set to resume at 4 p.m. and is a nine-inning game. Game two, a seven-inning game, will start approximately 30 minutes after game one ends.
