CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - The Chillicothe Paints, presented by Adena Health System, tied a Prospect League record in front of more than 4,200 fans Saturday night, beating the Champion City Kings 7-6 at VA Memorial Stadium for their 13th win in a row.
Champion City (0-3, 17-15) made most, if not all, watching have serious doubts about the outcome going in the Paints' favor after scoring three runs in each of the first two innings, taking a 6-0 lead.
Chillicothe (3-0, 20-12) made an early pitching change, bringing on Justin Diefenbach, who stabilized the game for the Paints, allowing them to get back into it. The Kings didn't score the rest of the night.
The Paints got the first one back in the bottom of the second. Ben Gbur reached on an infield hit, moving to third on a single by Alex Ludwick and scoring on a two-out single by Nathan Karaffa, cutting the deficit to 6-1.
Trey Maeker and Jackson Feltner both walked to start the bottom of the fifth. Jake Silverstein singled to left field, loading the bases with no outs. Colin Summerhill then grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Maeker and moving the remaining runners to second and third. A wild pitch brought home Feltner, moving Silverstein to third. After Kent Reeser drew a walk, an errant pickoff attempt to first allowed Silverstein to score, moving Reeser to second. After a pitching change, Nathan Rose hit a two-out double, scoring Reeser and cutting the Kings' lead to 6-5.
The Paints got a leadoff double from Maeker in the bottom of the sixth, he advanced to third on a single by Feltner. After a pitching change, Silverstein grounded out to third, scoring Maeker and tying the game at 6-6. Reeser then hit a two-out double, scoring Feltner and giving the Paints a 7-6 advantage, the eventual final score.
Chillicothe starter Matt Dockman exited after 1 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits, walking one and striking out one. Diefenbach (1-3) earned his first win of the summer, allowing two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out four over 4 1/3 innings. Ruben Ramirez pitched the final three innings, earning his third save of the season. He entered the game with runners at first and second with no outs and stranded them. Ramirez didn't allow a run or a hit, he walked one and struck out two.
The Paints head to Springfield, Ohio, Sunday for an Independence Day matinee against the Champion City Kings at 4:05 p.m.
