The scoring began with a bang in the second inning on Marcos Sanchez smash to right center, his fourth home run of the season to give Burlington a 1-0 lead. Burlington added another run in the second on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Lincoln Riley to grab a two run lead.
Springfield responded in the third on a sac fly from John Weglarz to make the score 2-1. Chase Honeycutt copied that with a sac fly of his own to make the score 3-1.
The Bees scored three runs with only one hit in the home fifth. Aone out hit by pitch was followed by a hit by pitch, a single, hit by pitch, walk and a balk gave Burlington a 6-1 lead. Again, Springfield answered, striking for a pair of runs on the sixth to cut the Bees lead down to 6-3.
The seventh inning seemed to last forever as the teams would combine for ten runs in the frame. A costly error by Zane Zielinski allowed the Sliders to avoid a double play. Tate Wargo singled off Simon Gregerson to make the score 6-4. Gregerson was replaced by Garrett Langrell, but he struggled out of the pen, allowing two walks, a hit by pitch, and then a hit, giving up three more runs and Springfield had a 7-6 lead. The Bees then went to Reece Wissinger who struck out the next three hitters to get Burlington out of the inning.
The Bees, using hits from Ben Nippolt and Jackson Jones scored six runs in the seventh and regained a commanding 12-7 lead. Nippolt delivered a two-run double and Jones dropped a two-run single into center. The Bees were ready to take the field for the eighth before severe weather entered the area ending the game.
Burlington begins a two game road trip at Cape Girardeau on Saturday and Sunday before returning home on Tuesday against Alton
